Throwback Thursday - Skin Conditions & Pet Dermatology

In this throwback episode of the Canine Culture Podcast, host Brittany delves into the world of pet dermatology with a special guest, Dr. Rosales, a veterinary dermatologist based in Miami, Florida. Dr. Rosales sheds light on common skin conditions and allergies that afflict our furry companions, offering invaluable insights into their management and prevention.

Starting with an exploration of the various specialists in veterinary medicine, Dr. Rosales highlights their expertise in addressing skin issues in dogs and cats. They emphasize the prevalence of allergies as a primary concern, affecting up to 80-90% of their patients, with environmental allergies and flea allergies topping the list.

The conversation extends to hotspots, acute skin lesions indicative of underlying allergies, and practical tips for maintaining optimal skin health in dogs. Dr. Rosales advocates for a balanced diet, appropriate grooming practices, and targeted supplementation when necessary.

What is a Veterinary Dermatologist?

A veterinary dermatologist is a veterinarian who has undergone extensive post-doctoral training in the diagnosis and treatment of skin, hair, ear and claw conditions of animals. Veterinary dermatologists have the extra training to recognize unusual dermatological conditions, that a general veterinarian may not be familiar with, and guide the pet owner to the most direct diagnostic plan and treatment.
